government gives to keep f1 in montreal

Why? Why are we paying to keep a Formula 1 race in Montreal, but in the past the Canadian government is loathe to step up to help Canadian hockey teams?

Where's the big stink from taxpayers over this? Why aren't we as ticked about this as we would be if this kind of taxpayer money was going to keep an NHL team in Canada? What's more important culturally? Hockey, or a Formula 1? I would argue neither should get government cash, but I bet if we were forced to choose, we'd choose something had some level of cultural significance.
